Mubashir was found in an unconscious state at 5.30 a.m. on Wednesday and was taken to Kasaragod General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

However, Mubashir’s family strongly disputes the official version. They allege that he was beaten inside the jail—either by cellmates or staff—and forced to consume pills. They say Mubashir had previously conveyed this to them. The family also questions the delay in informing them, claiming that neighbours were notified instead of the immediate family. They further allege widespread drug use within the jail and warn that placing mentally unstable inmates with regular prisoners is dangerous.

A conclusive determination on the cause of death will be possible only after the full forensic and postmortem reports are completed.
