കാഞ്ഞങ്ങാട്: കെട്ടിക്കിടന്നത് കേവലം മാലിന്യമല്ല, ഒരു നാടിന്റെ ദുരിതമായിരുന്നു. ഒടുവിൽ കാഞ്ഞങ്ങാട് നഗരസഭയുടെ ശാപമായിരുന്ന ചെമ്മട്ടംവയൽ ട്രഞ്ചിങ് ഗ്രൗണ്ടിലെ മാലിന്യമലകൾ അപ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുന്നു. 20 വർഷമായി കാറ്റിലും മഴയിലും ഒരുപോലെ വിഷപ്പുക ഉയർത്തിയ ഈ പ്രദേശം ശാസ്ത്രീയമായ വിപ്ലവത്തിലൂടെ വീണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ ഒരുങ്ങുകയാണ് നഗരസഭ.

2000-മാണ്ട് മുതലുള്ള മാലിന്യങ്ങൾ കുന്നുകൂടി ചെമ്മട്ടംവയലിലെ 50 സെന്റ് ഭൂമി അക്ഷരാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഒരു ‘നരകമായി’ മാറിയിരുന്നു. വേനൽക്കാലത്ത് കത്തിയമരുന്ന പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക്കിന്റെ വിഷപ്പുകയും, മഴക്കാലത്ത് കിണറുകളിലേക്ക് ഒലിച്ചിറങ്ങുന്ന മലിനജലവും പ്രദേശവാസികളുടെ ജീവിതം ദുസ്സഹമാക്കി. പ്രതിഷേധങ്ങൾ തെരുവുകളിൽ നിന്ന് തെരുവുകളിലേക്ക് പടർന്നിട്ടും പരിഹാരം അകലെയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ, ഇപ്പോൾ 53 ലക്ഷം രൂപയുടെ ‘ബയോ മൈനിങ്’ പദ്ധതിയിലൂടെ ഈ ചീഞ്ഞഴുകിയ ചരിത്രം തിരുത്തപ്പെടുകയാണ്.

അത്യാധുനിക യന്ത്രങ്ങൾ, ശാസ്ത്രീയ പരിഹാരം ബെംഗളൂരുവിലെ പ്രശസ്തമായ ‘ഗ്രീൻസ്’ ഏജൻസിയാണ് കരാർ ഏറ്റെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. ട്രഞ്ചിങ് ഗ്രൗണ്ടിൽ ഇതിനകം കൂറ്റൻ യന്ത്രങ്ങൾ സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഏകദേശം 5400 ക്യൂബിക് ടൺ മാലിന്യമാണ് ഇവിടെയുള്ളത്. മണ്ണും പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക്കും ലോഹങ്ങളും വസ്ത്രങ്ങളും ഓരോന്നായി തരംതിരിച്ച് അംഗീകൃത യൂണിറ്റുകളിലേക്ക് മാറ്റും. പ്രകൃതിക്ക് ഒരു തരി പോലും പോറലേൽക്കാതെ ഭൂമി പഴയപടിയാക്കുകയാണ് ലക്ഷ്യം.

മാലിന്യം നീക്കി കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ വെറുമൊരു ശൂന്യമായ ഭൂമിയല്ല ഇവിടെ ഒരുങ്ങുന്നത്. നഗരസഭയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ ഈ പ്രദേശം സൗന്ദര്യവൽക്കരിച്ച് ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉപകാരപ്രദമായ രീതിയിൽ മാറ്റിയെടുക്കും. ദുർഗന്ധം വമിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന ഇടത്ത് പൂക്കൾ വിരിയുന്നതും ശുദ്ധവായു ശ്വസിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നതും സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടിരുന്ന പ്രദേശവാസികൾക്ക് ഇത് വെറുമൊരു പദ്ധതിയല്ല, മറിച്ച് അതിജീവനത്തിന്റെ അടയാളമാണ്.

After more than two decades of suffering caused by accumulated waste, a long-awaited transformation has begun at the Chemmattamvayal trenching ground in Kanhangad. What stood for years as a symbol of neglect and environmental distress is now being reclaimed through a scientific bio-mining process initiated by the Kanhangad Municipality.

Since 2000, unsegregated waste dumped across nearly 50 cents of land had turned the area into a severe health and environmental hazard. Seasonal fires released toxic fumes, while rainwater carried pollutants into nearby wells, making daily life unbearable for residents. Despite repeated protests and demands, a permanent solution remained elusive—until now.

With an investment of ₹53 lakh, the municipality has launched a comprehensive waste remediation project, entrusting the work to Bengaluru-based firm ‘Greens’. Modern machinery has already been installed at the site to process approximately 5,400 cubic tonnes of accumulated waste. The operation involves removing soil first and then systematically segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials such as plastics, metals, textiles, and footwear. These materials will be transported to authorised treatment and recycling facilities.

Once the waste is completely cleared, the reclaimed land will undergo beautification and redevelopment, transforming it into a safe and useful public space. For residents who endured years of foul odour, pollution, and health risks, the project represents not just environmental restoration but a long-overdue return to dignity and quality of life.

Officials say the initiative marks a major step towards sustainable waste management in Kanhangad and could serve as a model for similar urban centres struggling with legacy waste. As the city turns a painful chapter in its environmental history, Chemmattamvayal is set to breathe again—clean, green, and renewed.
